Household Products

Lets review a couple household products!

In this post I will be reviewing Downy Unstoppables In Wash Scent Booster, Lush Scent and Formula 409 All Purpose Cleaner Lemon Fresh Antibacterial. I use both products on a regular basis when doing laundry and cleaning my house.

Information available for Downy Unstoppables In Wash Scent Booster, Lush Scent states that they are solid perfume beads that are not expected to present a health hazard. However, it should not be ingested or near children. Upon further reading there were a few acute health effects such as: eye irritation, respiratory tract infection and skin irritation. There were no chronic health effects reported. I was relieved to read that the finished product was not carcinogenic. The Hazardous Material Identification System (HMIS) rates this product a 1 in health and flammability ratings which means it is slight. It was rated minimal in reactivity rating.

Information available for 409 All Purpose Cleaner Lemon Fresh Antibacterial had a warning for moderate eye irritation. It also states that the substance can be absorbed through the skin which can contribute to overall exposure. There are no medical conditions known to be aggravated by the exposure of this product. As for carcinogenicity, none of the ingredients in the product are on the IARC, NTP or OSHA carcinogen list. Unfortunately, there was no information provided by the manufacturer with regards to health, flammability and reactivity ratings.

So far, I have really enjoyed doing these activities because it makes me hyperaware. I was surprised to read 409 had such limited information because I would think it is a high-risk household product. I think it probably is not the best cleaning product to have in my home due to exposure and absorption through the skin. I will be looking into more environmentally friendly cleaning products. As mentioned in my personal care products BLOG, I think all consumers should know about exposure and risks. People need to be aware of toxins that they are being exposed to and it should be done clearly.

Hope you enjoyed this post!

  1. Hi Iliana,

I enjoyed your review on the household products that you use. I was interested in the findings for the Downey Unstoppables, particularly because I use Downy Liquid Softener for all my laundry; I assume that they use very similar ingredients for both products. It was pleasant to read that there are no health hazards that are associated with this product and no carcinogens used either. I am never surprised to learn that these products are harmful when ingested or may cause irritation when it comes in contact with sensitive areas, such as your eyes. I was taken aback by the possibility of respiratory tract infections; I have seen and smelled the product before and was curious as to how it could cause a respiratory tract infection. This is probably something I will look up after this.
I was excited to compare your findings of formula 409 to my findings of Lysol disinfectant sprays. Both can be used on surfaces and kill viruses and bacteria. It was nice to read that the Formula 409 did not contain any carcinogens. What I noticed is that many of the things that we presumed would be very harmful, are not as bad for our health or environments. I think it is important that you mentioned your surprise with the limited amount of information the Formula 409 product. I doubt that the lack of information is a result of the companies confidence in the safety of their products. As consumers, I think it is our jobs to push to get more tests done to ensure that the products we are allowed to buy do not impose any harm on us or our environments.

I enjoyed your post and cannot wait to read more from you.

  2. Hi Iliana,

The fact that your 409 All Purpose Cleaner didn't have much information is really concerning to me!! I've heard about this product all my life, so I know it's been out on the market for quite a while. This is such a concern because it goes back to the idea that companies can put out basically any product without having to give an explanation or detailed idea of what the contents are in the products we buy. These toxins might have a huge negative impact on our health, and yet companies are not legally required to really explain the dangers to us consumers. That's so sad and dangerous! Also, the fact that it can be absorbed through the skin is a HUGE red flag!!! People who use that products should wear gloves or some protective gear, and they deserve the right to know that!

    Thanks for posting,

    Aveena

MSDS and ToxNet

Hello, In this blog assignment I will be reviewing the MSDS and answering the following questions: Ethanol What are the health risks associated with this chemical? The health risks associated with ethanol are eye irritation, skin irritation, and specific target organ toxicity.  Is the chemical a carcinogen? Ethanol is a chemical What personal protective equipment or special precautions should be taken when working with this chemical? When working with this  chemical eye/face protection like wearing chemical safety googles and face shield should be used. Skin protection like wearing chemical protective clothing (gloves, boots, apron). Respiratory protection like wearing a NIOSH approved air-purifying respirator with an organic vapor cartridge should be used.  If this is a chemical found in your workplace, what training/education were you given about any risks associated with this chemical? I don't work with this chemical now, but I have in the p...
😊Hello!  This week I will be talking about Environmental Health Home assessment (Module1.5). The goal of this assignment is to asses my home for environmental health hazard. I've actually never done such assessment so I thought it would be an interesting assignment. Let's see how I did... p.s. images of the assessment will be present at the bottom The home I currently live in was built in 2003 so I didn't have many hazards in the house section. I don't think my house was ever tested for lead due to the year it was build. I do not have a basement so living space in basement did not apply to me. I will say I had never heard of home radon test and home radon ventilation systems. This was interesting because I had to do some extra research to clearly understand what radon was.  In my home I have a gas dryer that is vented, gas hot water heater that is vented, gas stove, fireplace, and combustion heating source. I do not have a wood stove or a gas, kerosene, or propan...

Think about it-Website Exploration

Hello! This week I will be writing about a local organizations that health professional volunteers can seek if a natural disaster were to occur. In my search I found two local organizations that are ready to help during a natural disaster.  The Sacramento County website also featured these organizations. Even though, the second organization is not exclusively for health professionals I think that they are a well-rounded organization with a great cause. Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps engages medical professionals who want to donate their time and expertise to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This organization also trains, deploys, and retains volunteer health professionals. If you are interested in joining the Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps you can do so by going to www.SacMRCfoundation.org and filling out an application. The Regional Center for Volunteerism Hands on Sacramento is an all-inclusive coalition of faith and community based organization. The coalition co...
