Hello!
This week I will be posting about the Cal/OSHA and provide a short summary of a program in Cal/OSHA of how it might relate to our health and safety.
I've decided to step outside the box and select the Health and Safety in the Adult Film Industry program in Cal/OSHA. I thought this topic would be interesting to learn more about. The Health and Safety in the Adult Film Industry program exist because adult film workers face serious health risk due to potential infection with HIV and other pathogens transmitted through sexual contact. The program focuses on preventing direct exposure. They provide instructions on the proper use of condoms and other control measures that can reduce the risk of infection. The Cal/OSHA website provides an outline of each condition and its method of transmission. It's a very informative site for people in the adult industry to use in order to educate themselves and be aware of the health risk they may face. Additionally, Cal/OSHA requires employers in the adult film industry to provide and ensure the use of condoms and implement other measures to protect employees from sexually transmitted infections. It should be known that Cal/OSHA does not protect "independent contractors," that is two individuals who decided not to use barrier protection that work freely and decide to perform activities being recorded and then upload them via livestream. However, employees can call of visit Cal/OSHA to file a complaint or simply learn/obtain more information.
This program is really important because it helps prevent and reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Not only that but some of these infections and disease can be transmitted outside of intercourse in the general public. Reducing exposure of disease to the general public is part of keeping us healthy and safe. Personally, I didn't think that there was such a programmed that set standards for the adult film industry but I am relieved to read that workers in the adult film industry are being protected and that their safety is being taken to account.

Hi Iliana,
ReplyDeleteWow, what an interesting subject! Thanks for posting. I did some research about CAL/OSHA as well, but did not choose this topic, so it was very informative to hear about what this branch does in other aspects of its work. I think this part of their job is important, because every worker should be treated with fair and equal rights to safety and protection, no matter what. And just like you said, adult film workers are exposed heavily to STIs, which are a huge public health problem! Just as you stated, I think the educational aspect of this program (teaching about safe sex practices, safe condom usage, etc...) is so important because it can empower workers to feel their best and know they are safe when they are at work.
Hi Iliana,
ReplyDeleteLooks like all three of us decided to look deeper into OSHA and the types of services they offer. From your post, I was surprised to learn that OSHA has programs for workers in the Adult Film industry. Many of us fail to realize that these individuals are workers and have the right to a safe work environment. I think that the most important aspect of this program is that they provide educational material and awareness to these workers of all the potential health issues they are at risk of developing in the work place and how they can be avoided.
