Hello! In this blog I will be talking about my meal last night and how it rates using the "what's on my food website." Hope you enjoy the post!
I try to buy as many organic products as possible. Even though organic produce is not inexpensive it’s worth the investment. However, I am aware that some “organic” foods may still contain some chemical residue. I read an article, “Is ‘organic’ really organic?,” not too long ago that shines some light on organic farms and the rules they need to abide in order to be considered organic.
Last night I had a very sad dinner. I was at the library until 9pm and by the time I got home and I simply wanted to make myself the quickest “warm” meal possible. I had scrambled eggs with jalapeno sausage. Unfortunately, for this BLOG it would have been better if I did not have organic items. Both the eggs and jalapeno sausage were organic. Majority of my food is organic. I try to follow a Paleo diet and shop fresh organic products for the most part. If I weren’t shopping organic food and produce I would definitely be concerned. From the website non-organic eggs can disrupt hormones and have mild traces of carcinogens in the piperonyl butoxide pesticide. Even then, I thought that eggs would not have pesticides but they really are everywhere.
From the website I have learned that many of the pesticides have honeybee toxins and human health effects. I think that people should be more informed and educated in this subject. Labeling practices need to improve and they need to be reader friendly. One of the biggest issues is that many consumers don’t know how to read labels, I include myself in that group. There should also be better regulation of pesticides. We need to think about our human health instead of focusing on products that will generate the most income. I feel that putting out health in the back burner is the quickest way to reduce our life expectancy.

Hi Iliana,
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned something that crossed my mind as I read your post. As you stated, we usually associate pesticides with plant based foods, so I was surprised as well to see that pesticides were found inside chicken eggs. This may imply that chicken feed may contain pesticides that are then consumed by the chicken, and it then cross membranes and ends up in the eggs laid by the chicken. The article you referenced is interesting, since it looks into whether or not good labeled as organic are truest free of toxins and chemicals. I would agree that overall labeling processes need to be better regulated and provide more information to the public about what is on their food.
Hi Iliana,
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear that you eat organic! I try to, but honestly I am a junk food junkie and I like to eat food from outside, because I'm often too lazy to cook...hehe. I agree that labeling needs to be more transparent and clear on packaged foods so that consumers know exactly what they are getting. Often people don't even know what "organic" means, or how the USDA plays into their food safety. As public health workers it's so important for us to spread this information, and I'm glad you're able to start at your own table with your own choices of food!
