Topic of Interest: Food Safety

A topic of interest for me is food safety.

At the local level, Sacramento County’s Environmental Management Department has a Food protection Program. This program focuses on Food Facility Complaints and Foodborne Illness.

At the state level, California Department of Public Health has a Food and Drug Branch. Under the Food and Drug branch there’s a Food Safety Program. This program has regulations and statues, certificates and licenses, guidelines, and specific food programs.

At the Federal level, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has the Environmental Health Services program that oversees food safety. The FDA has regulatory oversight through the creation of laws to ensure food is safe before reaching the public.

  1. Hi Iliana,

This is an Interesting topic, especially since we consume these things everyday but don’t quick now where they come from and how they get from the farms to our tables. With news about salmonella or e. Chili outbreaks due to contaminated food, it is important to see how our government regulates the food we eat to ensure that it is of the best quality and safe for consumers. I am also looking into a similar topic, antibiotic use in the food industry. I look forward to hearing more about your topic and see if some of the laws/policies/regulations overlap with antibiotic use in food.

  2. Hi Iliana,

What a great topic! A few semesters ago, I shadowed a health inspector as she went to multiple different restaurants/food places in SF, and I must say- this topic is so wide ranging and interesting, I'm sure you'll find SO MUCH information! I should warn you though, the Food borne Illness information might get a little scary! I am so glad you are doing this topic, because food is something we come into contact with every single day. Knowing more about the disease process and outbreaks, and how to prevent food borne illnesses is a huge part of public health, and something I think you will have a blast learning about!

    Thanks again

MSDS and ToxNet

Hello, In this blog assignment I will be reviewing the MSDS and answering the following questions: Ethanol What are the health risks associated with this chemical? The health risks associated with ethanol are eye irritation, skin irritation, and specific target organ toxicity.  Is the chemical a carcinogen? Ethanol is a chemical What personal protective equipment or special precautions should be taken when working with this chemical? When working with this  chemical eye/face protection like wearing chemical safety googles and face shield should be used. Skin protection like wearing chemical protective clothing (gloves, boots, apron). Respiratory protection like wearing a NIOSH approved air-purifying respirator with an organic vapor cartridge should be used.  If this is a chemical found in your workplace, what training/education were you given about any risks associated with this chemical? I don't work with this chemical now, but I have in the p...
😊Hello!  This week I will be talking about Environmental Health Home assessment (Module1.5). The goal of this assignment is to asses my home for environmental health hazard. I've actually never done such assessment so I thought it would be an interesting assignment. Let's see how I did... p.s. images of the assessment will be present at the bottom The home I currently live in was built in 2003 so I didn't have many hazards in the house section. I don't think my house was ever tested for lead due to the year it was build. I do not have a basement so living space in basement did not apply to me. I will say I had never heard of home radon test and home radon ventilation systems. This was interesting because I had to do some extra research to clearly understand what radon was.  In my home I have a gas dryer that is vented, gas hot water heater that is vented, gas stove, fireplace, and combustion heating source. I do not have a wood stove or a gas, kerosene, or propan...

Think about it-Website Exploration

Hello! This week I will be writing about a local organizations that health professional volunteers can seek if a natural disaster were to occur. In my search I found two local organizations that are ready to help during a natural disaster.  The Sacramento County website also featured these organizations. Even though, the second organization is not exclusively for health professionals I think that they are a well-rounded organization with a great cause. Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps engages medical professionals who want to donate their time and expertise to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This organization also trains, deploys, and retains volunteer health professionals. If you are interested in joining the Sacramento Medical Reserve Corps you can do so by going to www.SacMRCfoundation.org and filling out an application. The Regional Center for Volunteerism Hands on Sacramento is an all-inclusive coalition of faith and community based organization. The coalition co...
